WastAway® Services Canada applied for a research grant in October 2011. The process included a Statement of Interest followed by a Full Project Proposal. In May 2012, Alberta Innovates – Energy and Environment Solutions announced we were successful and awarded a matching grant. The research program was designed to measure the effects of co-firing WastAway’s Processed Engineered Fuel (PEF) with Alberta coal. CANMET Laboratories completed a baseline test with coal only followed by a number of tests which included various percentages of WastAway’s PEF. The full report from CANMET will be released in June 2013 – however preliminary findings show that the PEF performed very similar to coal in the combustion chamber. This is what we were hoping for. Additionally, the emissions of the PEF and coal tests were monitored and found to be completely safe. Furans and dioxins were below detectable levels. It is encouraging that our findings are very similar to projects in Europe that co-fire solid recovered fuels with coal.
