The WastAway® technology is certainly making inroads in Western Canada. Drayton Valley Alberta is a small community that has big plans. They would like to use the WastAway technology to convert their municipal solid waste into fuel pellets called Processed Engineered Fuel (PEF). PEF would be sold to local coal-burning power plants, reducing fossil fuel and creating greener energy. In order to apply for a project grant, Drayton Valley needed to verify the amount of Carbon Offsets that would be created by a WastAway project. Blue Source Canada ULC, one of North America’s leading greenhouse gas management firms, was engaged to carry out greenhouse gas quantification of the proposed installation in Drayton Valley, Alberta. Using an existing Alberta protocol, Blue Source Canada determined that one tonne of waste diverted from landfill, converted into PEF, and co-fired with coal would result in a reduction of 2.75 tonnes of CO2 equivalent. That means for every tonne of waste diverted from landfill, the environment would benefit by a reduction of 2.75 tonnes of greenhouse gases going into the atmosphere. Blue Source Canada was quoted as saying it was one of the most economical and environmentally beneficial carbon reduction programs when measure of a dollar per tonne of reduction. The result of Drayton Valley’s grant application will be announced at the end of May 2013.
